Furadantin Dosage:
Adults: Normaldos 50 mg 3 times daily for 5 days. If resistance determination or cultivation response justifies a higher urine concentration, 100 mg may be given 3-4 times daily. In case of renal impairment, the dose should be reduced to avoid neurotoxic side effects. At serum creatinine 180-360 μmol, 50 mg is given twice daily and at higher values 25-50 mg per day. In severe renal impairment (GRF <40 ml / min), the secretion is so low that effective urine concentrations may occur only in exceptional cases.
For long-term treatment (recurrence prophylaxis) for months and years, the lowest possible daily dose should be tested individually. Often, 50 mg morning and evening are enough. In the case of asymptomatic bacteriuria in pregnant and recurrent cystites, only an evening dose of 50-100 mg has been reported to give good results.
Children from 1 month of age: 3 mg / kg body weight and day divided into at least two doses in one week. Contraindicated to neonates and children under 1 month of age (see Contraindications). For long-term treatment (recurrence prophylaxis) for months and years, 1-2 mg / kg body weight / day is given.
Furadantine should be taken with food. In part, the absorption increases and the risk of nausea decreases, and the excretion period for active concentration in the urine is extended. Acid urination increases the resorption of Furadantin into distal tubules and increases the antibacterial effect.
The tablets can be crushed and mixed in a little liquid or mixed in the food.
