"George Papanicolaou Symposium
The annual George N. Papanicolaou Symposium was conducted at the Archbold Commons and the Weill Education Center of the Medical College of Cornell University on Thursday,
May 11, 2006 in collaboration with the Panevoikos Society and in the presence of the Minister of Health of the Hellenic Republic Hon. Dimitris Avramopoulos.
Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos The presence of the Minister of Health of the Hellenic Republic in an official event of the Hellenic Medical Society of New York proved to be truly remarkable from many aspects and warrants special attention in this Newsletter. After greeting in a very personable way the faculty and attendees of the Symposium, he delivered his address acknowledging that he has been in the Health Ministry for just few months. However, as his speech on the current appeal of the ideals and philosophical points of the legacy of George Papanicolaou unfolded, he was extremely well versed on Papanicolaou’s work and achievements, their benefits and implications for the worldwide medical practice in cytology and cancer prevention, as if he had had experience with medical matters for several years!
Furthermore, he clearly projected an engaging vision for advancement of the healthcare system in Greece through progress in medical research and engagement of medical societies of the diaspora in this task. He announced that among his important goals as a Minister is the establishment of Greece as a major center in medical research. In this effort, he wants to invite as active participants the Hellenic Medical Societies of Diaspora.
Acknowledging the currently active scholarship program of HMS, he announced its financial support with $50,000; this was applauded with both enthusiasm and gratitude. Finally, he invited HMS to officially participate in a working meeting at his headquarters in Athens. The initiation of this ambitious bundle of initiatives by the Minister of Health represent a seminal development for HMS, and the follow-up on these matters will promote the mission of our Society in many fronts. When our mission is intertwined with the progress of medical research and heathcare infrastructure in Greece, it becomes indeed very rewarding.
In brief, he is the first Minister of Health to (i) actively reach out to our Society, (ii) meet our officers and members, (iii) participate in the Papanicolaou
Symposium, (iv) underline the importance of medical research for the benefit of population health, (v) invite us to assume a more active role in relation to the
transformation of the healthcare system in Greece and (vi) directly supported the HMS Scholarship fund with an unexpected $50,000 donation on behalf of the Ministry! For all the above reasons, achieved so early in his tenure, we congratulate him wholeheartedly and endorse his initiatives!"

ΕίσοδοςSaturday Dinner Dance Gala"On Saturday,
December 2, 2006, HMS held the Annual Gala Dinner Dance at the Jumeirah-Essex House Hotel Ballroom (...) Our Gala event was also attended by Distinguished Guest, His Excellency Dimitrios L. Avramopoulos, Minister of Health of the Hellenic Republic (...) he had pledged the initial support of the HMS Scholarship Program with $50,000. At this point, we are delighted to report that both of these promises have already materialized. The funds have been advanced to the HMS account, and the Minister kindly accepted the Board’s invitation to be our Distinguished Guest at the 2006 gala event, and he indeed provided breaking news (...) Needless to say, his eloquent oration completely captivated the audience during his speech at the Gala and won everyone’s respect and enthusiastic applause (...) He continued to surprise us by announcing the HMS will be at the helm of the world biomedical conference organization, since we were the first he shared his vision with, and because of the enthusiastic response provided by our broad membership. Finally, he offered the sculpture of Hygeia (the ancient goddess of health and daughter of Asklepios) for the HMS Offices."
