The fifth dose of vaccine is recommended this autumn for everyone over 65 or in the risk group
All adults over the age of 65 and adults in the risk group are recommended an additional refill dose against covid-19 this autumn, the Swedish Public Health Agency announces. On the other hand, the benefits of vaccination are judged to be low for younger adults and children who are not in the risk group.
The new recommendations apply from 1 September, announced Minister of Social Affairs Lena Hallengren and the Director General of the Public Health Agency Karin Tegmark Wisell during a press conference on Tuesday. The vaccinations will take place in the same way as the vaccinations against influenza, but will continue to be free.
"People with an increased risk of serious covid-19 disease are recommended an additional replenishment dose to strengthen their protection for the coming autumn and winter season, as we have reason to believe that the spread of the virus will increase again this autumn," said Karin Tegmark Wisell.
However, in the group of adults between 18 and 64 years, who have no risk factors, no further doses are currently recommended this autumn.
- In the group as a whole that has already been vaccinated with three doses, we assess that the risk of serious illness and death is low, so the benefits of an autumn dose are limited for this group.
However, people who for various reasons still wish to be vaccinated with an additional dose should be able to get it, according to Karin Tegmark Wisell.
Children between 12 and 17 years of age who have undergone primary vaccination with two doses also do not need to take another syringe this autumn, for the same reason. However, the Swedish Public Health Agency is open to the possibility that the recommendations may change if the situation changes. At present, restrictions are not considered to be relevant this autumn.
- We would not have abolished the classification of covid-19 as a socially dangerous disease if we had feared that we need to introduce restrictions this autumn, said Lena Hallengren.
